For Jennifer Sourounis and the Bulthaup Chicago team, the reimagining of the showroom, located in a 3,000-sq.-ft. century-old commercial loft, was an opportunity to explore contemporary lifestyles. In particular, the brand wanted to showcase an open kitchen lifestyle that incorporates furniture in addition to typical kitchen fare. Additionally, the new iteration was envisioned as an event space for intimate gatherings.
The design team embraced the “warts and all” nature of the loft, with its creaking, aging hardwood floors, 14′ ceilings, 10′ windows and weathered timbers. These aspects serve as both a nod to sustainability and a striking visual contrast to ultra-modern kitchen elements and displays, while original paintings displayed on the exposed brick evoke a comfortable lived-in feel. A new fireplace fosters a welcoming atmosphere.
