This project reimagines a former coach house, once part of a 10-acre mansion estate situated in Winnetka, IL on the bluff of Lake Michigan. While the mansion has since been demolished, this home – which features a European-inspired design – has been renovated many times. The goal of this redesign was to combine the classical design of the building and the contemporary home it has become. The team was able to track down the historic blueprints from 1910 for insight into the original aesthetic.
Leading the design, the team from Jessica Lagrange Interiors was inspired by the lakefront setting in selecting the color palette. A standalone Waterworks Candide bathtub and marble walk-in-shower provide optimal views of the lake. The Skyline marble mosaic floor and polished nickel fixtures from Lefroy Brooks intentionally complement the architectural era of the house.
Light blue tones of paint were selected to reflect the colors of Lake Michigan, while the cool, gray tones of the Pentelicus Venato marble installed in the shower, vanity countertop and the wainscoting serve as a sophisticated yet simplistic backdrop. Saxby sinks from Waterworks are paired with Hydrology faucets from Lefroy Brooks, with Robern medicine cabinets and Visual Comfort lighting adding function and a touch of bling.
One of the biggest challenges for Goldberg General Contracting was updating the plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems – and accomplishing all this while the homeowners remained in the home during the renovations. A new heating plan was necessary, particularly given the cold winds coming off the lake. Radiant heating was installed behind the marble wainscoting and under the floor to provide spa-like warmth throughout.
