Located north of Chicago, this home is situated on a winding ravine that feeds into nearby Lake Michigan. The home opens with a long dramatic hallway that shields the interior from the street. Strategically placed floor-to-ceiling architectural windows illuminate the interior throughout and foster an intimacy with the nearby woodlands. This project was a particular challenge as GGC incurred substantial post pandemic material supply shortages, and price escalations. As such, concerted efforts were undertaken to maximize a high-quality outcome for our clients while managing budgetary restraint.
A generous courtyard surrounded on three sides is accessed from the primary suite, great room, and screened porch. The outdoor space features a bluestone patio with dining, fireplace, and kitchen. The architecture of the masonry home is modern with off-white brickwork and a balance of both flat roofing and pitched cedar roofing in reference to the traditional designs of the neighborhood.
The clients have an extensive contemporary art collection and desired a “forever” home where they could live amongst the art. The interior color palette was selected in neutral tones to place emphasis on the distinctive artwork. The home features built-in millwork crafted out of rift white oak and wide plank hardwood flooring with flush baseboards. The floor plan was intentionally designed for an age-in-place lifestyle with nearly all the home on one level. There is a central great room with a kitchen, living room, dining room and access to the primary suite. The residence also has a guest suite positioned on the second floor above the garage. A lower level features a temperature, and humidity-controlled art gallery showcasing the depth of the private collection.
